Splinter

SPLINTER, 2014 | hollowed driftwood, sawdust, glue | 1640 x 60 x 100mm

In the same year I made Splinter I was commissioned to create the tree for The Godot Company’s major new production of Samuel Beckett’s ‘Waiting For Godot’. For this I adopted Samuel Beckett’s reductionist approach hollowing out an entire tree. ‘Splinter’ takes this hollowing out process to the extreme, creating with this piece a kind of woodcarving in reverse, removing all the internal mass leaving nothing but the thinnest possible skin or rather, surface grain. From the sawdust I have also made, positioning so they crawl through the cracks of the hollowed wood.
